First Aid on the Farm

  • Workplace NL guidelines require Newfoundland and Labrador employers to ensure a first aid kit is available in the workspace, and that those first aid kits provided meet the requirements of the Canadian Standards Association (CSA standard Z1220).

  • If you employ a worker or workers on your farm, we recommend you stock at least two (2) personal first aid kits in commonly used workspaces including inside any tractor that may be used, and also on the farm property in an easily accessible location marked with signage.

Best Practices to Meet NL OHS Regulations

  • Post signage in a prominent position near the first aid kit that includes:

- The name of the person in charge of the first aid kit

- The name and qualifications of each person currently trained to administer first aid

- A printed emergency procedure and telephone list for reaching the nearest police, ambulance, fire station, hospital or physician

  • Be sure to document in detail all incidents requiring medical attention on your farm.

First aid is crucial in agriculture because farm work involves constant exposure to numerous hazards, and therefore carries a high risk of accidents involving acute bodily harm.

Immediate care can significantly impact the outcome of injuries sustained on farm, especially in remote areas where professional medical help may be delayed. Having a grasp on first-aid essentials can assist lone workers with managing their own safety until help is available.

Requirements in Newfoundland and Labrador:

  • NL employers are required to make sure an adequate number of first aid trained workers are present at the worksite whenever farm employees or temporary workers are present on the farm.

  • A list of all first aid trained workers and their names must be posted in an accessible common area of the worksite.

  • All farm workers must be informed about the farm's workplace injury reporting procedure and to report injuries or illnesses that happen at work to their employer immediately. A written copy of the policy and procedure for reporting injuries must be posted in an accessible common area of the worksite.
